Deadlines/Important Information Regarding This Tax Season
We work on tax returns in the order that they are received, so we recommend getting us your information as soon as you have the majority of your tax info even if you are waiting on 1-2 documents. By the time you receive those documents, we should be about ready to start on preparing your return(s).
To allow for quicker turn-around times for tax return completion and in an effort to better control our workflow, we are now scheduling tax return data submissions for a specific date. In order to keep our turn-around time to 3-4 weeks or less, we will only be accepting a certain number of return data submissions per day.
Please click on the Calendly link to schedule your date for submission and choose how you would like to submit your tax information (drop-off, mail-in, or document uploads). If you have any trouble scheduling, please contact our office at 919-556-9500 and someone from our admin team can assist you in getting your submission date scheduled.
You will be able to pick a date anytime between January 2nd and August 15th, but keep in mind...
If you don't want an extension:
Corporate business returns (1120 or 1065) received by 2/15 are guaranteed to be completed by 3/15 as long as there are no issues with incomplete document submission or missing information. Anything received after 2/15 will be automatically extended and will be completed on a first come first serve basis after our personal return deadline.
Corporate business returns (1120 or 1065) received by 2/21 with their personal return information received by 3/1, are guaranteed to be completed by the April deadline as long as there are no issues with incomplete document submission or missing information.
Individual (1040) or Estate/Trust (1041) returns received by 3/1 are guaranteed to be completed by the April deadline as long as there are no issues with incomplete document submission or missing information. Anything received after 3/1 will be automatically extended and will be completed on a first come first serve basis with the preparation starting on 4/21. Because we work extended hours, don't close on any federal holidays or take vacations January through April 15th, our staff takes a much-needed break for a couple of days after the 15th. This year our office will be closed April 16th - 18th. Once we return back to the office on 4/21, we will start on the returns received after 3/1 and we will resume our normal hours of 8am-5pm Monday-Thursday and 8am-12pm on Friday.
If you get an extension:
7/15 is the last day to submit tax info for extended business (1120 or 1065) returns and associated individual (1040) or Estate/Trust (1041) returns in order to have them completed by their final IRS deadlines. **there will be a 20% late fee for businesses submitted after this date if you would like your return to be completed by the final deadline.
8/15 is the last day to submit tax info for extended individual (1040) or Estate/Trust (1041) returns that do not have an associated business (1120 or 1065) return in order to have it completed by the final IRS deadline. **there will be a 20% late fee for individual returns submitted after this date if you would like your return to be completed by the final deadline.
A Note about Filing Extensions:
Contrary to what you may have heard or believe, there is no audit risk involved with filing a tax extension. While we suggest that you make an estimated payment with your extension, the IRS in no way "red flags" extended tax returns and there is no increased audit risk by the IRS. The IRS encourages taxpayers to file an extension request if they need additional time to file a complete and accurate tax return and has made the process as simple as possible. The request is automatically accepted and requires no reason to be given. In fact, the majority of the partners and CPAs at Mitchell & Nemitz, PA file personal tax return extensions each year, to allow us the necessary time to prepare our own complete and accurate tax returns. If you are feeling rushed or stressed about tax deadlines, please do not hesitate to have us file an extension for you.
There are many other benefits to filing tax extensions, as well. If you would like more information, please reach out to our admin team.
Extension Payments:
If you are getting an extension for your 1120 Corporate business return, there is a franchise tax fee that must be paid to NCDOR (it is either $25 or $200 depending on how your business is set up) and we recommend paying that by 3/15 to avoid paying any penalties or interest. 3/13 is the last day to bring in checks for payments that you would like us to send in with your extension. You can also pay it online. If you pay it online, please let us know the dates and amounts you paid for when we prepare your return. We will send out information for those that will need to make extension payments after 2/15.
If you are getting an extension for your individual return and you typically owe income tax, we recommend sending in an extension payment by 4/15 to avoid paying any penalties or interest. 4/13 is the last day to bring in checks for payments that you would like us to send in with your extension. You can also pay it online. If you pay it online, please let us know the dates and amounts you paid for when we prepare your return. If you do not know how much to pay, we recommend sending in a payment similar to what you've paid in the past. If you end up paying more than what you owe, you will get it back as a refund. If you don't pay enough, the penalties and interest would still be less than what you would pay if you didn't send anything. If you would like for us to do an extension payment calculation, we would need the majority of your tax information by 4/8 and there is a $200 fee for payment calculation requests received 3/1-4/8.
